It begs the question why did this episode have to be an hour long.

It felt like they could only get everyone in the same room for a couple hours so they had to add a lot of scenes to beef up the special. The live action segments are fun and it leads to a great payoff, but it takes a lot of repetitive sequences to get there. The major problem this special runs into is the fact that there is a lot of wasteful filler. However, this birthday celebration does not go off without a couple of hitches. This is still one of the best animated shows on television. Back to this episode, in particular, each character and environment feels so lively as well as beautiful to look at. A type of energy that the first 4 season of the show had and lost slightly with every subsequent season. This brings a whole new type of energy to the show this episode included. Every character is so much more expressive and dare I say animated. While some changes felt pointless and unnecessary, the revamp the show had in season 11 has really suited the show quite nicely. Throughout the shows history it seemed like every couple seasons they where updating and tweaking the way the animation was done. I have been a huge fan of this show all my life and I have seen how the animation has evolved over the years. But, like a said before this is a live action/animated hybrid and the animation portion of the episode is its usual high bar self. It is the most memorable part and I would watch a whole show based around that. There is just something really cool and surreal seeing the voice cast work together in a live action environment. There is also really good direction in these scenes and some really fun creative choices made. This sequence is the highlight of the episode and gives way to a ton laughs. This special is also filled with great cameos, hysterical references, and a standout Sequence where all the main voice cast plays live action versions of themselves. Watching the likes of Sandy, Squidward, Mr.Krabs, and Miss Puff bicker over SpongeBob is so much fun and you really feel that each character has a deep history with one another. The premise of Patrick taking SpongeBob on a tour of the surface as the rest of the characters we all know and love set up a surprise party gets a lot of miles out of it. As usual the cast lend their voices to some truly hilarious moments. Listening to this voice cast never gets old. From Tom Kenny’s iconic SpongeBob to Rodger Bumpass local grump Squidward this special has no short of talent. Like with every episode the voice cast is spectacular. SpongeBob SquarePants: SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout, is a really fun celebration of this titular sponge’s last 20 years, but there are a couple disappointing elements in this hour long hybrid animation/ action special.
